Aaronel's Architour: Bilboa and Beyond - April & May 2001
Stronger are photographs that incorporate the aesthetics
of the subject: The jewel box quality of the simply processed "Crenolated
Battlement," the vertical read of "Familia Sagrada -- Mystery of
Faith" that is as imaginatively composed as its site, or the steely structural
web of the "London Ferris Wheel."
The "Guggenheim Suite," a limited edition
boxed set of six 11-by-14-inch color toned prints, is a study of the building's
personality. Among these, however, Jeff Koons' flower-covered "Puppy"
sculpture, without strength of line or timeless reference, seems an ephemeral
bauble.
In a second room, full color photographs
and four small kinetic, lighted Lucite and chrome sculptures from the 1980s
show another side of Gruber's expression.
